Millbank Academy

Co-curriculum

“Enrichment is one of the key pillars of Future Academies. We are supported by Future, a charity which provides significant funding across our schools, so that activities are accessible to all children. Enrichment ranges from building a robot to chatting to a museum curator, having a go at archaeology to performing a play. Our unique programme supports enrichment in four specific ways:

  • academic enrichment,
bringing topics to life through workshops or trips out. This is where life-long inspiration happens

  • exposure to culture, the arts and sports,
linked to our work alongside a range of charities to provide access to sports, music and theatre
  • personal development of character, integrity, resilience, and judgement,
with residential courses in Years 4 and 5

  • knowledge and consideration of different careers and walks of life,
by bringing children into contact with experts and professionals from many different disciplines”

Sport

We work with Greenhouse Sports to provide a full curriculum and extra-curricular activities around sporting skills from gymnastics, softball, football, athletics, hockey, tennis and other popular sports, through to wellbeing, sportsmanship and teamwork. In addition, we work with Platform Cricket, a charity promoting cricket amongst school-aged children. Children learn to swim in Year 2, meeting the statutory requirements. There are a range of clubs both before and after-school for both Key Stage 1 and 2 children.  We introduce children to the great outdoors from Year 4, and in Year 5 they learn to trek, climb, camp and canoe or sail.

 The Arts

We encourage the creative and emotional development of children through our music programme.

Every student has the opportunity to learn an orchestral instrument in Key Stage 2.

We receive support from the Pimlico Musical Foundation and run the Pimlico Primary Choir. Talented students go on to join the Pimlico Musical Foundation Choir.

We offer dramatic opportunities in both Key Stage 1 and 2 and this year will offer LAMDA examinations as an extra-curricular option to Key Stage 2.

We encourage all children to participate in drama workshops and support classes to attend theatre events in the West End.

Our Year 6 children usually stage a Shakespeare performance at the end of their time with us.

Societies

A stand-out feature of our school is the club programme with around twenty activities a week on offer. We are lucky to have not only a wonderful teaching staff with many additional skills, but partnerships with Greenhouse Sports, Pimlico Musical Foundation, Plunderers Cricket and Westminster School to offer a choir as well as clubs for art, drama, multi-sports, cricket, chess, geometry, cross stitch and crochet. Clubs are tailored to Key Stage 1 or 2. We provide breakfast clubs and after-school homework clubs to support working parents or those on pupil premium. In the holidays, we offer Easter and summer holiday clubs in partnership with our sister schools within Future Academies.

Trips

As well as term visits linked to academic topics, children also take part in a three-day residential at Forest School (Year 4) and a five day residential at Outward Bound (Year 5), giving our children understanding and passion for the natural world, whilst building personal confidence and skills.

This year, children will go to Loch Eil, Scotland and Aberdovey, Wales to take part in rock climbing, water activities and cooking over a campfire.
